Link in Tears of the Kingdom continues the story from Breath of the Wild, but all your stuff is gone! Everything you collected leaves you along with your hands, including the now iconic blue Champion’s Tunic! If you’re missing Link’s new look, there is a way to get the Champion’s Tunic in TOTK.
While the story might force you back to step one, there’s an easy for you to get your old shirt back. If you run through a simple quest, how to get the Champion’s Tunic in Tears of the Kingdom it’s pretty easy. It’s even tied to the questline to get another key item, Link’s hairclip in TOTK. The blue Champion’s Tunic is one of the key items for Link, it’s pretty central in all art from the game. If you want to make the step up from random Hylian gear to Link’s proper Champion’s tunic, you’ll need to pick it up quickly.
There’s a bit of a questline and puzzle involved in getting the Champion’s Tunic in TOTK. However, you can get through it quickly if you’re focused. We’ll run you through the entire journey to grab Link’s proper shirt in the new game.
How to Get the Champion’s Tunic in TOTK
Getting the Champion’s Tunic in Tears of the Kingdom starts as part of another journey, getting the hair clip in Tears. However, if you don’t want the whole story there, you can get the quest in your adventure log by heading over to Link’s old house in Hatena village.
Descend the well to find Zelda’s secret room. One you read her diary, you’ll find something important out. She’s made a brand-new Champion’s shirt since Link couldn’t keep his in one piece while adventuring. She’s hidden it in Hyrule Castle, which was a slightly better hiding place before everything that happened in Tears of the Kingdom.
This initial quest portion is optional. You can just skip straight to the next step. However, it’s nice to get the story and flavor text of why your old shirt has been stashed away in Ganon’s fortress. With that set, you’ll need to head over to the Throne Room in Hyrule Castle.
Getting to the Throne Room to Get the Champion’s Tunic in TOTK
Hyrule Castle is pretty intimidating. Unlike in Breath of the Wild though, you can’t just walk in from the start of the game. It’s risen up into the sky which presents the first hurdle to getting the Champion’s Tunic in Tears of the Kingdom.
This is going to be simple though if you take the right route. If you head to the closest Tower, which is by the first settlement you reach in the game, you can get there pretty fast. Propel upwards from this tower and start floating in the general direction of Hyrule Castle.
It might surprise you how little stamina you actually need to reach the castle. Although it could be wise to cook a few stamina restoring items if you’ve not conquered too many of the Shrines for upgrades just yet. If you begin to glide at maximum height, you’ll easily cross over the top of Hyrule Castle. Once you’re positioned above it, drop in. Aim for the highest building at the very top of the castle. That’s where you need to reach if you want to get the Champion’s Tunic for Tears of the Kingdom.
The Throne Room Puzzle
Once you drop in, you’ll quickly hit the main sanctum building, on the top floor of Hyrule Castle. This nicely also avoids all of the enemies in the game! You don’t need to know too many tips for Tears of the kingdom and its combat to get through this.
Once you land, head down to the ground floor of the throne room. Then up the stairs to the thrones, now partly collapsed. That’s where we find the puzzle to get the Champion’s Tunic in TOTK.
The puzzle, as alluded to by Zelda, is focused on the torches in the room. You don’t have to run all the way around the multi-level room though. Instead, there’s two torches right in front of you. If you’ve played any Zelda games before this, you’ll know what to do. Just light them. Do this by starting a little wood floor and grabbing a torch, or the old-fashioned way with fire arrows.
Once you do this, a secret compartment will open up behind the thrones themselves.
Getting the Champion’s Tunic in TOTK
Once the secret compartment opens up, you can jump into it to find a chest. In this chest is the Champion’s Tunic! Now renamed the Champion’s Leathers. That’s thanks to some adjustments that have been made by Zelda in-between games to make it a bit more reinforced. Once you have the Tunic, you’re free to head out. Although, there is plenty more loot for you to discover in Hyrule Castle and a Shrine to make travel a bit easier in future.
Once you’ve got the Champion’s Tunic in Tears of the Kingdom, you can get Link looking just like his Breath of the Wild self. It doesn’t quite give him the classic Zelda look though, which is a different set of armor. You’ll also need to go through other steps to get Epona in TOTK or the Hylian Shield.
The Tunic itself is great to have back. Once it’s back in your inventory though, you might want to turn your eye to upgrading it. That’s the easy next step, to upgrade the Champion’s Tunic in Tears of the Kingdom! For now, you can get back to building contraptions and solving shrines in style.
