Diablo 4 Beginner’s Guide

Diablo is a franchise that has been on the market for almost 30 years now. The games in the series have evolved over time and the very recent Diablo 4 is no different. If you are a new player in the series or would like to have some advice before setting off to discover Sanctuary and the dangers that lurk within this world, you are in the right place. In this article, we have decided to create a Diablo 4 beginner’s guide for all those who have some difficulties or doubts and need a helping hand before they can start the game.

What genre is Diablo 4?

Diablo 4 is an open-world RPG in which players will have the opportunity to explore vast environments characterized by the presence of numerous activities to do, in addition to the main story. This is the first difference we can notice compared to the other games in the series (for more information, we recommend reading this article). This new chapter of Diablo, given its open-world structure, does not have loading screens when we decide to move from one area to another, but everything is much more fluid and continuous.

One of the features that have not undergone any changes is, for example, it’s classic decadent and gloomy setting, indeed in this fourth chapter of the series this aspect is accentuated even more. As in the past, even in Diablo 4, you can choose whether to set off on this long adventure alone or in the company of other players, even if in some cases the help of other users will be necessary in order not to succumb to the dangers that populate the streets of Sanctuary.

What Diablo 4 difficulty to choose?

Before starting your adventure, you will be faced with a very important decision: what difficulty to play the game on. There are two difficulties available: World Tier 1 and World Tier 2. If you are new to the genre and the series, we advise you to start with the World Tier 1 difficulty which is characterized by less powerful and intelligent enemies who will not make things excessively difficult for you. This difficulty is also suitable if you intend to take part in the end game of Diablo 4 (the real highlight of the game) and you don’t want to experience a sharp change between the two modes. Despite this, the experience and gold you will receive during your adventure will be similar to that of Tier 2. The higher difficulty will give you the possibility of obtaining more resources, but the enemies you will have to face will be more powerful and it is therefore a choice not advisable if you are not an expert in the game.

What are skills in Diablo 4?

Skills are abilities that players can assign to their character. Each Diablo 4’s class has different skills than the others that are specific to that type of class, as well as those that are common to all. There are different types of skills: basic, core, ultimate, actives, passives, and defensive.

  • Basic skills: these are normal attacks and basic skills that do not consume special resources;
  • Core skills: These are unique skills related to the class that players use. They are stronger skills than the basic ones and are characterized by unique characteristics and attributes;
  • Ultimate skills: they are rare and powerful skills that, however, cannot be used frequently because they have a long enough cooldown period. Each class has a set of three available, but only one can be equipped at a time;
  • Active skills: these are all those skills that must be activities in order to see their effects;
  • Passive skills: these are always active skills, so as soon as players start a fight or explore a place, they will immediately see their effects;
  • Defensive skills: as the name implies, they are skills that allow you to have defensive effects on your character and which are indispensable in some situations of the game.

Can you reset skills in Diablo 4?

Diablo 4 is a game where the right equipment and the right skills can undoubtedly make all the difference. If during your adventure you realize that the way you have built your character is not efficient or does not suit your way of playing, we advise you to intervene immediately to reset everything. This operation will cost you little, in terms of resources, in the early stages of the game, so it is definitely recommended to do it as soon as possible. Even setting a single skill differently can open up certain scenarios and certain gameplay mechanics that you consider more suitable for your needs and requirements.

How do HP and resource points work in Diablo 4?

Life points and resources are two fundamental aspects of the game, as well as in all those in which they are present. As for the HP, if they reach zero, your character will die and you will be forced to start over from the last checkpoint. Obviously, you can restore all or part of your life bar by making use of potions that you will find by killing enemies or finding gems in the game world. As you progress through the story and your character becomes more and more powerful, your health points will increase. Resource points, on the other hand, are essential for being able to cast spells and use active skills. When the meter is empty, you will not be able to use your skills or spells until the meter is full again.

Focus on the main campaign

The Diablo 4 campaign, thanks also to its open-world nature, is anything but linear. Once you have completed the prologue and arrived in the main city, you will have the opportunity to explore the game world as you please. As you progress through your adventure, the level of the zones will match that of your character, ensuring a balanced gaming experience. The rewards you get for completing the various missions will also be balanced based on your character and the difficulty level of the mission itself.

Although it is important to focus on completing the main story, it is almost mandatory to also take care of most of the secondary activities that Diablo 4 offers. Taking part in these activities is useful not only for lengthening the duration of the game but also for obtaining important resources that will allow you to level up your character and unlock new skills.

Complete side quests and objectives

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, it is vitally important to also dedicate yourself to completing the side quests. Completing these activities will allow you to gain additional experience, gold, and elixir, all of which will come in handy for dealing with the enemies in the game world. Furthermore, by thoroughly exploring every corner of Sanctuary, you will find a myriad of objectives to complete that will grant you experience and loot that you can use during the main campaign and that will help you advance your character’s characteristics and abilities.

Complete dungeons and liberate strongholds

Another activity to keep in mind when you are playing Diablo 4 is that of dungeons. Dungeons are places where there are many enemies to defeat, often not very easy to deal with, but who will be able to thank you for your efforts with different rewards: gold, experience, and objects of all kinds. Each area of the game has more than twenty dungeons for you to complete, which means that there are over 100 dungeons in the game. Completing all of them would definitely give you a big hand in your character progression. A dungeon in particular that we want to recommend, especially if you are at the beginning of your adventure, is that of Lost Archives. This dungeon guarantees excellent rewards both at the beginning of the game and at the end, as well as the possibility of unlocking the Aspect of the Protector, very important to add to your equipment given the defense skills it possesses.

We also mention the possibility of freeing strongholds, PvE capture points that guarantee different rewards. If you plan to complete all the dungeons, it will also be mandatory to take part in this type of activity since some of them will be used to open access to specific dungeons. Furthermore, freeing these capture points can also reveal secret passages that will allow you to unlock shortcuts between one place and another. Like almost any other activity in Diablo 4, this one can be done either alone or with the help of other players.

Engage in legion gatherings and defeat world bosses

Gathering legions are gatherings of monsters that will appear in different areas of Diablo 4’s game world. By taking part in these events, players will be called upon to defeat hordes of more or less powerful monsters that will earn gold, experience, and loot. Another type of random event that players can take part in are boss fights against world bosses. This particular type of boss spawns every six hours or so with a specific pattern and in a specific location. These are extremely strong bosses, impossible to defeat alone. For both of these activities, therefore, it is recommended to team up with other players and create an effective strategy.
