Genshin Impact Dad $20,000

Lim Cheng Mong, a man from Singapore, was shocked when the bank called to inform him of multiple missed credit card payments totalling to over SGD $20,000.

The bill was linked to 89 “mysterious” transactions in his name, which he was unable to account for at the start.

He later found out that the $20,000 bill was due to his 18-year-old daughter’s spending on a mobile game called Genshin Impact.

His daughter had unknowingly linked her GrabPay e-wallet (which was linked to his credit card) to her game, and went on a 6-week spending spree of buying in-game items to “upgrade her character”.

Unfortunately as all the transactions were legitimate, Lim had no choice but to accept the bill.

“At first I thought I was scammed, but the credit card company said these were all legitimate transactions and there was nothing it could do”

Companies that deal with online payments are now warning parents to set notifications on their e-wallets to keep tabs on their children’s spending.
