PSG Talon and Fnatic will be leaving Iceland soon, following their elimination from Worlds 2021. After their heartbreaking loss against the second-place Hanwha Life Esports, Fnatic ended last in their group with a 1-5 record. PSG Talon were also eliminated by HLE, who beat RNG in the process and securing a top 2 finish.
With PSG’s elimination, only the top four regions are left in the tournament, as PCS will not have representatives going into the Knockout Stage.
Fnatic’s Worlds 2021 run
Coming into Worlds 2021, Fnatic was ready to repeat last year’s surprising run. Always known as the aggressive and scrappy team, they were able to outperform enemies when it mattered the most. This year, however, Fnatic didn’t get the chance and fell in our LoL pick’em too.
Due to a family urgency matter, ADC Elias “Upset” Lipp had to go back home before the group stage started. Fnatic made a public announcement a few hours prior to the start of the main event, shocking all fans who knew nothing of what went down. In order to replace him, Fnatic called their ADC Louis “Bean” Schmit from the Academy team Fnatic Rising. Despite having very little practice and with all the pressure that Worlds tournaments bring, Bean performed impressively, holding well against the best players in the world.
While Bean stepped up during Worlds 2021, Fnatic’s other members struggled to deliver on the day. Out of the five members, mid laner Yasin “Nisqy” Dinçer seemed “out of sorts”. The core member that was responsible for transferring the pressure across the side lanes was getting caught repeatedly during the early game, making it impossible for him to showcase his strengths. Not only that, but the whole Fnatic squad showed a severe lack of team play and coordination. As a consequence, their LoL odds throughout the tournament fell drastically.
Bwipo, one of the veteran members in Fnatic, was also caught in the discussion. His recent situation made fans question what went down during these weeks. Earlier today, he was able to explain his point of view in this tweet.
As fans, we should be more aware of what damage we might be causing to the people on the other side. We hope Bwipo can come back stronger from what was a stressful Worlds 2021.
PSG Talon – PCS’s last straw at Worlds 2021
PSG Talon’s second round-robin performance wasn’t great, as they lost the first two games. As a result, they had to rely on a RNG win over HLE in order to keep their hopes alive at Worlds 2021. Their hopes, however, were shattered. HLE won a surprising series against RNG, securing themselves a seed for quarters and eliminating PSG in the process.
It felt like it was going to be the year for the rise of the PCS, following their strong performance at the Mid-Season Invitational. PSG Talon ended in the top four at MSI, which granted them a Pool A seed at Worlds 2021. The advantage of avoiding the number 1 seeds from other major regions made PSG a strong contender for a top 8 finish. Unfortunately, they didn’t repeat the same success they had in Iceland earlier this year.
Following Beyond Gaming’s elimination at the play-ins stage, PCS will have no representatives going forward. This is the sixth consecutive tournament that a PCS/LMS team failed to qualify for the Knockout Stage. The last time it happened was back in 2015, with the glorious Flash Wolves.
We’re hoping to see PSG Talon showcase strong performances in the future years. Always a dominant presence in their domestic league, we expect PSG to make it to the international stages very soon. These Worlds 2021 eliminations, however, mark both Fnatic and PSG Talon’s end this year’s competitive season.
