Gustavo “Sacy” Rossi talked about the role changes between him, Rory “dephh” Jackson and Bryan “pANcada” Luna on their first series in VCT Americas.

VCT Americas 2023 started with an exciting matchup against Sentinels and 100 Thieves, where Sacy’s squad won with some role changes between three of the members.

During LOCK//IN, Sacy played as Initiator in both maps, while pANcada was in charge of the Controller role, and the team’s IGL, dephh, played as Controller and Sentinel. However, the squad failed to showcase their capabilities as they encountered a 2-0 loss against FNATIC.

Role Changes against 100 Thieves

Against 100 Thieves on the first day of VCT Americas, we saw Sentinels’ Sacy playing mainly Controller roles, which was a surprise since he usually took up the Initiator roles previously in LOCK//IN, Ludwig x Tarik Invitational, and even with LOUD.

pANcada also tried something new on Fracture, playing Killjoy instead of his regular Controller roles. Lastly, dephh took on the responsibility of playing Initiator, changing his regular Sentinel role.

Sacy’s Interview

Sacy mentioned that the team had lacked a Sentinel, and the coaching staff had expressed interest in trying pANcada in this role, which led to the idea of him playing a Controller. According to Sacy, he did not mind switching roles since he had already switched from League of Legends to Valorant, further adding that he was enjoying his new role as a Controller, but admitted that he still had a lot to learn since it was a relatively new experience for him.

Syyko’s Comments on the Role Changes

Don “Syyko” Muir, the coach for Sentinels, explained to Dot Esports why he believed it was possible to move former world champions into different roles. He noted that pANcada had a remarkable ability to be an impactful lurker. Syyko felt that pANcada’s skills were wasted in the controller role since the current Sentinel meta had made controllers less lurky. Therefore, the coaching staff decided to switch pANcada to the Sentinel role, and Syyko considered it a “no-brainer.”

To make the new Sentinels composition work, Syyko wanted to get dephh back on initiator agents like KAY/O and Breach, which meant someone had to play smokes. Sacy was then asked to take on the role of smokes.

Syyko spoke highly of Sacy, saying he was an amazing world champion VALORANT player and a great leader who learned quickly. The coaching staff asked him to pick up another role, and Sacy was great about it.

Initially, Syyko shot down the Sacy-to-smokes idea proposed by analyst DrewSpark, as he thought Sacy was an initiator player. However, the more evidence Sacy put in front of him and the more work he put in, the coaching staff agreed to try it out, and it looked great. Syyko praised his coaching staff but admitted initially being skeptical about the role swaps.
