Worlds 2022 Play-In Group Stage: Day 1 Recap

Evil Geniuses move on to the Worlds 2022 Main Event after their 3-0 sweep over MAD Lions, who are eliminated from the tournament.

Coming into the series two teams had four out of their five players in their respective league’s All-Pro first teams, including MVPs in Inspired and Nisqy. While MAD Lions were criticized because of their qualification without winning a Bo5, EG was also on shaky ground as they were playing with a substitute ADC.

One more stat to keep in mind, in all their Bo5 series at international events, North America has never won a series against their European counterparts.

EG vs MAD Game 1

Game 1 started with bot lanes trading from level 1 onwards, but the first blood came in the mid lane after a great Elyoya gank. There wasn’t much action in the game during the early and mid game, EG was leading in gold, but MAD was ahead in drakes. EG found a big fight around the Soul point for MAD and took a Baron, but their choice meant MAD had the chance to get themselves on that Soul point. The problem occurred when Nisqy tried to flank EG with a TP and got caught. MAD tried to force a Baron in the meantime, but an Inspired smite gave the Baron to EG, which also got three more exit kills. With no one to defend the MAD base, EG finally got their first win against a LEC team in 2022.

  • Teams: EG 1 – 0 MAD
  • Time: 37:41
  • Kills: 14 – 7
  • Turrets: 8 – 3
  • Gold: 69.5k – 61.2k
  • Dragons: 2 – 3
  • Barons: 2 – 0

EG vs MAD Game 2

Jungle supremacy once again in the early game as Elyoya found his second first blood in the series, this time in the top lane. MAD also got the first Herald, but EG was able to answer with their own ganks and they were able to take the gold lead thanks to Jojo’s mid Sett. Once the game opened up, EG was ahead in fights and controlled the objectives despite MAD’s best attempts at stopping them. EG even found an ace when they started a 20-minute Baron and turned to fight. They secured the objective afterward and extended their lead to over 10k. Their lead was enough to just push for the end while diving MAD at their Nexus towers at 24 minutes.

  • Teams: MAD 0 – 2 EG
  • Time: 24:09
  • Kills: 6 – 22
  • Turrets: 2 – 9
  • Gold: 39.1k – 51k
  • Dragons: 0 – 3
  • Barons: 0 – 1

EG vs MAD Game 3

Inspired was the aggressive jungler in Game 3 as he got himself two early kills by camping Armut in the top lane. EG controlled the early game by finding kills around the map, but MAD was the team who got the first Herald and the early drake wasn’t a priority at all for either team. EG map macro during the mid game was also superior as they always came out ahead in the objective trades. They then decided to start Baron and look for a fight. They found the 5v5 they were looking for and got a four for zero trade and secured the first Baron of the game. EG didn’t want to let the game go late as they sieged two lanes with their Baron and 10k gold lead. They found one pick on Kaiser which was enough for them to once again dive towers and end their sweep against the EU fourth seed.

  • Teams: EG 3 – 0 MAD
  • Time: 28:34
  • Kills: 13 – 3
  • Turrets: 10 – 2
  • Gold: 55k – 44.1k
  • Dragons: 2 – 1
  • Barons: 1 – 0
