Cloud9 has officially released an update on the sudden release of its League of Legends head coach Nick “LS” De Cesare. A few moments before their match against CLG, Cloud9 made an official tweet stating that LS had been relieved of his duties and was released from the organization.

LS’ coaching stint on Cloud9
LS was officially hired by Cloud9 last December, following their top eight finish at the 2021 League of Legends World Championship. Thanks to the connections he has had with some of the C9 coaching staff and players, LS accepted the job knowing that he would be able to work with a pool of talents that followed his vision of the game.
In that regard, he was also one of the reasons why C9 was able to pick up two Korean players, top laner Summit and ADC player Berserker, from the LCK. LS should’ve become the strong intermediary that could help the two entries gel with the rest of the team.
Yet, LS was only able to coach four games in the 2022 LCS Spring Split, with 3 wins and 1 loss under his guidance. LS officially spent 78 days on Cloud9 before receiving the news of his release.
For the rest of the split, Max Waldo will be C9’s new LCS Head Coach. Waldo spent the 2021 season as an assistant coach on C9’s staff and has known LS for many years already, living with the former head coach when Max went to Korea to improve his gameplay. Since then, LS has helped Waldo find coaching opportunities, vouching for him during his streams.

The sudden announcement shocked fans and the whole community since no one was expecting it. League of Legends enthusiasts were questioning the reasons for such a decision but Cloud9 did not give any insight on the day of the release.
A few days later, Cloud9 posted a video on Youtube, giving an update on the situation and telling fans what led to the LS’ departure.
“The reason why we got to the point we were with LS was that Cloud9, for years, has developed systems on how we like to coach and operate our team, and despite our best efforts, working with LS to try to come to terms and see eye-to-eye on how that should work, we were unable to make that actually happen,” C9 owner Jack Etienne said in a video released on Twitter today.
“I think it’s important to note that all players, coaches, and management were aware of these issues and frustrations and our mutual efforts to try to resolve them over the last several weeks,” Etienne said. “Unfortunately, as time went on, it was really clear that we were unable to find a resolution and come together on figuring out this problem. We decided that it was important that we make a change and release LS at that point so we could move forward and focus on the future.”
“Moving forward, our goals and directions with the team haven’t changed,” Waldo said. “Our intention is still to improve at a rate where we’re good enough, come Worlds, to be an international threat. Our players are still confident, motivated, and optimistic to keep playing and improving to get to that goal.”
While LS might be gone, his short stint on the LCS stage brought a lot of hype in the whole LoL community. His drafts and vision of the game made him stand out from the rest, as even the best teams in the LCK and LPL were interested in seeing the innovation LS has always been looking for.
The C9 former head coach has returned to Korea and will likely return to being a streamer and content creator. In one of his first streams upon returning, he mentioned that he won’t coach for any team anymore, as the risk for him is too big. Nonetheless, his experience on C9 made him realize that he still has a lot of passion for League and will resume co-streaming and produce other content from Korea.
