It’s been almost 4 years since Nintendo first announced a new Mario Bros. movie to be in production with Illumination Studios, the Universal Pictures division known for hit animated films such as Despicable Me, Sing, and The Secret Life of Pets. When the voice cast was revealed during a Nintendo Direct presentation in September of last year, the internet collectively lost their minds. Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Horrible Bosses) was amongst these big and unexpected celebrity names, as he is set to be playing the role of Mario’s brother, Luigi.

On a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, Day said, “I’m playing Luigi. In fact, I just was recording that this morning, and I’d love to tell you all about it, but they are top secret with this stuff.”

When Kimmel then asked if Day has read through the whole script, he replied, “I know nothing. I know nothing. I show up and they’re like ‘you say this’ and ‘you say that’ and it’s all very funny and good, and then I walk out and there’s like two guys in overalls with like hammers that are like ‘don’t you tell nobody nothing about this Charlie. I swear to God we’re gonna get your kneecaps, we’re gonna break your neck.’”

Another interesting behind-the-scenes detail that Charlie Day revealed is that the voice cast has been recording their lines for the film at separate times, rather than all being in a room together.

Illumination’s untitled Mario film is being produced by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri alongside Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, with the theatrical release officially set for 21st December 2022.
