TSM, a North American esports company, has announced top player Matthew “Wardell” Yu and the company have mutually split ways.
TSM stated that after failing to qualify for the VCT NA Stage 1 Challengers Group Stage, the complete lineup will relocate to Austin, Texas, where they would rehearse and participate in smaller, open events in order to prepare for Stage 2.
Wardell, on the other hand, apparently chose to leave the Valorant squad rather than go to Texas, according to TSM.
Wardell is no longer a member of TSM’s Valorant team
Last May, the 23-year-old pro joined TSM when the North American company acquired the whole mouseSpaz team. Wardell was a standout in the early days of Riot Games’ shooter, earning the title of best Valorant player in North America and assisting TSM in winning two Ignition Series tournaments in 2020.
The squad swept T1 in the T1 vs. Nerd Street Gamers showdown in June 2020, and then defeated Sentinels 3-2 in the FaZe Clan Invitational grand final in August 2020.
The North American team, on the other hand, did not have the same success in the Valorant Champions Tour (VCT) in 2021, failing to qualify for any international events throughout the season.
These battles lasted until 2022. Despite the additions of former Faze Clan duelist Corey “Corey” Nigra and ex-Immortals player Daniel “Rossy” Abedrabbo, TSM was unable to qualify for the VCT NA Stage 1 Challengers Main Event in both open qualifiers, therefore excluding TSM from the VCT until Stage 2 Challengers in May.

Wardell’s departure with TSM sparked speculation even before the news was confirmed, when the Knights Monthly Gauntlet competition in March featured Johann “seven” Hernandez instead of Wardell. Yassine “Subroza” Taoufik did little to quell the allegations, informing Twitch viewers that he would not be discussing his old TSM teammate on live.
Wardell, it turns out, will not be joining the team in Austin, Texas, and has instead decided to depart the company.
Wardell expressed his gratitude by saying, “Thank you for taking me out of the gutter and giving me a completely new life. That is something I will never forget.”
Wardell’s departure from TSM has elevated him to one of the region’s top free agents. 100 Thieves appears to be a viable option, especially considering they are currently seeking for a committed Operator player.
TSM’s next opportunity to qualify for the main Challengers tournament will come during the VCT NA Stage 2 Challengers open qualifiers, which will begin in May of this year.
