Dragons Dogma 2 Will (Probably) Be Amazing

Dragons Dogma 2 is real and it will probably come out sometime next year. So here is everything you need to know about Capcom’s upcoming RPG epos.

At the most recent PlayStation Showcase, Capcom unveiled the gameplay of the upcoming Dragons Dogma 2 which was announced during the 10th anniversary special of the franchise last year.

Now running on the publisher’s proven RE Engine, it looks like it is shaping up to be more than just a worthy successor to the cult action RPG.

But we understand that Dragons Dogma is not as popular or known in the gaming landscape of 2023. So let us first introduce you to the franchise and tell you what you can expect from its sequel.

What is Dragons Dogma?

Dragons Dogma is a semi-open world Action RPG by Capcom that was released in 2012 on consoles and a few years later with its Dark Arisen expansion on PC.

But even back in 2012 it was one of those titles you either fell in love with or dropped before you’ve finished the 2-hour-long intro sequence.

You play as the Arisen, a chosen warrior who had their heart stolen by a dragon that just laid waste to the coastal town you call your home. Now it is your task to set out, figure out what is going on, and slay the dragon to reclaim your heart.

Usually, you’d look at Dragons Dogma and think it is just one of those big Western open-world RPGs in the vein of Skyrim and Dragon Age until you notice that the game is made by Capcom.

And not just anyone at Capcom, the game was helmed by the folks that brought you Devil May Cry 3, 4, and later 5. Something you come to feel as soon as you get into its combat.

Dragons Dogma questioned why don’t action RPGs play like Peter Jacksons Lord of the Rings movies looked. And it achieves that by hiding all the number crunching and stat distributing inherently to the genre behind exhilarating gameplay.

Again, no surprise considering the team behind it just came off Devil May Cry 4. And while Dragons Dogma isn’t a character action game, it definitely features the franchise’s outstanding combat and enemy design.

What makes Dragons Dogma so amazing is just how organic its combat is. Combing DMC’s expressive way to play your character with the creature depth of Monster Hunter.

It’s the kind of game you’ll only learn to appreciate once you’ve trained your AI comrades to fling you toward a charging maneater.

The game also made the clever choice to reject coop multiplayer and instead went for the Pawn system. For this, you create an AI-controlled character that’ll learn from your actions and habits in combat but can also be trained in ways to suit your playstyle.

Then you can go online and loan your own Pawn to other Arisen around the globe or rent someone else’s Pawn to aid you on your adventures.

These pawns will then advise you on how to slay certain creatures or complete quests. Created this fascinating system where players around the globe help out each other by proxy.

After its release and now with a cult-like following Dragons Dogma was a game that was bigger on the inside. It was rough around the edges, despite its fantastic combat and just didn’t fit the market of big open RPGs of the time.

It was a game that simply couldn’t realize its full potential at the time, be it due to budget constraints or technology. But that is about to change.

Why Dragons Dogma 2 will (probably) be awesome

We’ve only seen a few seconds of actual gameplay of Dragons Dogma 2 and it’s already shaping up to be the greatest game of all time. Half jokingly.

Everything we’ve seen in the trailer so far hints that Dragons Dogma 2 will be Dragons Dogma just bigger and bolder rendered in the witch-craft that is Capcoms RE Engine.

From the looks of it the combat system and all 9 vocations will return, as well as the setting of the first game Gransys. Pawns also seem to be back and it seems like you can now interact with them such as cheering them on or giving them a high-five.

But why all the excitement? The team behind Dragons Dogma 2 is helmed by one Hideaki Itsuno and Dragons Dogma has been his dream game ever since he started at Capcom in the mid-90s.

And after Devil May Cry 5 proved back in 2019 that action games can still deliver the same fluid and responsive controls for the PlayStation 2 era while being presented in cutting-edge graphics, there is now doubt that they’ll continue that work in Dragons Dogma 2.

And with the momentum, Capcom currently is going at, as well as the full confidence that Devil May Cry 5’s release inspired. There is no doubt that Itsuno and his team will deliver what might be the greatest action RPG of all time.

Just think about the insanity a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X is capable of in the hands of a team that has created some of the greatest 3D action titles of all time.

Dragons Dogma 2 will release, probably sometime next year, if Capcoms current trend of announcing and releasing games within a year or so is anything to go by, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
