Worlds 2021 – Quarterfinals Overview

Worlds 202 already brought a big twist to the expectations we had coming into the tournament. The LPL, considered by many the best region in the world, only qualified with two teams. FunPlusPhoenix’s shocking exit changed everything. On the other hand, Korea managed to qualify all four teams, including Hanwha Life Esports.

As for the LEC and LCS, both regions will bring one representative: MAD Lions for EU and Cloud9 for NA.

Worlds 2021 Knockout Stage Predictions

1. Royal Never Give Up vs Edward Gaming

Prediction: RNG wins 3-2

The series between Edward Gaming and Royal Never Give Up is probably going to be the closest one out of the four we will see. The two Chinese teams ended up in the same series. On one hand, it will guarantee an LPL in semis but on the other, it will be a lot of pressure for whoever advances.

Out of the two, I think that RNG might have an edge. Their top side of the map is stronger than their counterparts and it will make a difference in a Bo5. However, a lot will also come down to the mid lane. Yuan “Cryin” Cheng-Wei will struggle against Lee “Scout” Ye-chan individually, so he must help his team with his roams. If he can impact his side lanes enough, RNG will be victorious.

2. Gen.G Esports vs Cloud9

Prediction: Cloud9 wins 3-2

This might come to many people’s surprise but I’m giving Cloud9 the edge over Gen.G. This is a risky prediction but I personally think that Cloud9 is a team with the “X factor”. They’ve been very inconsistent throughout the year, but their peak performances are high. They have nothing to lose because they’ve already surpassed expectations and you can be sure they will play with the same confidence that got them through groups.

Gen.G always dropped the ball when it mattered the most. It happened during every playoff in the last two years but most importantly it happened in last year’s Worlds. They’ve managed to keep up with the expectations but there are still doubts about their gameplay under pressure. This might be Cloud9’s chance to return to the semifinals, following the 2018 Worlds run.

3. T1 vs Hanwha Life Esports

Prediction: T1 wins 3-1

T1 came into Worlds 2021 as the 3rd seed from the LCK. Despite the lower seeding, T1 was able to come out first in groups, beating the strongest enemy EDG. The team improved a lot compared to Summer. This was possible thanks to the synergy between the mid-jungle duo of Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok and Moon “Oner” Hyeon-joon, as well as Lee “Gumayusi” Min-hyeong taking the starting ADC position.

Hanwha Life Esports made an incredible run: from 8th in Summer Split to quarterfinals at Worlds is remarkable. However, this will likely be the end of the journey. HLE still relies too much on Chovy and Deft. If they don’t show up in the best form possible, the team won’t be able to withstand T1. It might be a quick 3-0, but I think Chovy will try his best to solo carry one game for the team.

4. Damwon Kia vs MAD Lions

Prediction: DK wins 3-0

After FPX’s fall, DK went undefeated in their groups. Not only that, but it seems like DK fixed the issues they had shown during the year and are looking the strongest team yet again.

Unfortunately for the LEC and the MAD Lions, this might be where everything ends. Their miracle run during groups stage allowed them to advance, but facing DK is completely another story. DK will capitalize on MAD’s mistakes more than anyone, and not give any chance to let the LEC team come back.

DK is seriously looking scary and they might dominate the competition just like last year. We hope MAD Lions can fight back and take one game, but against such an in-form DK it might not even happen.
