The LCL representative Unicorns of Love and the LLA team Infinity Esports are the first two rosters that won’t continue at Worlds 2021. Let’s see what went down in the play-in stage for these two teams who will be returning home.
Infinity Esports’ unsuccessful run
Infinity Esports’ return to Iceland, following the Mid-Season Invitational, did not go as expected. The team hoped to do better compared to the 1-5 record obtained at MSI, but the team was not able to take a win and finished dead last in Group A.
After losing to RED Canids and Hanwha Life Esports on the first day of the tournament, Infinity had a chance for the first victory against the LCO Champions PEACE on Day 2. The winning odds for Infinity were high so it was a great chance to make some LoL betting to earn some good cash.
The team’s hopes, however, were shattered. Infinity Esports’ mistakes made PEACE come back into the game, losing the third game in a row. Knowing that they would face the undefeated LNG Esports on the last day, Infinity Esports had very slim chances of leaving Worlds with a win in their tally: Infinity was dominated and was the first organization to leave Worlds 2021.
Unicorns of Love also failed expectations this year
The LCL teams, famously known for always having an “X factor”, were always an interesting addition in esports tournaments and particularly at every edition of Worlds. This year, though, Unicorns of Love lost their magic.
Just like Infinity Esports, UOL participated at MSI. Their run did not end well, being eliminated in a group where two out of three would advance. UOL was the one missing out.
Going back to the CIS, the Unicorns were able to win the Summer Championship. Despite that, their return to Reykjavík was bittersweet. The UOL had issues finding a suitable playstyle for the meta, losing to all the other wildcard regions. The LCL representative was 0-3 and their last opponent in the group was first place Cloud9.
In a miraculous turn of events, Detonation FocusMe defeated PCS representative Beyond Gaming, and UOL were able to come out victorious against the C9. Unfortunately, the last hopes on the tie-breaker fell short, as UOL lost to BYG. While last year they qualified to the Group Stage, this time around UOL are going home early.
Two Group Stage seeds up for grabs
Now that the groups have been finalized, we will have the Best-of-5 series to determine the last two spots in the groups stage. With LNG Esports and Detonation FocusMe advancing directly, it will be a battle between Hanwha Life Esports, PEACE, RED Canids, Cloud9, Galatasaray Esports, and Beyond Gaming.
