It’s the final day of Worlds Group Stage, and the last hope for the teams in Group D.
It’s been one of the tightest groups thus far. After two days of play, it was all tied up at 1-1, however, heading into the final day, we have two sides on 2-1 and two sides on 1-2. Sadly for EU and NA fans, their sides were on 1-2, with a lot to do. For them, it was an important first game, as MAD and Liquid would face off against Gen.G and LNG respectively. While it wouldn’t be all over if they both lost these games, it wouldn’t be an ideal start.
Gen.G vs MAD Lions
First Blood went over to GEN, but it was quickly traded back over to MAD as a brawl broke out behind the Rift Herald. For a game with a slow early game, we got five kills in a matter of seconds as GEN moved 1k gold ahead. Another fight around the Rift Herald, this time MAD came away with a lead in the fight, however, Ruler was left alone in the bot lane to gain turret plates. The first uncontested kill came on the top side, as MAD picked up a kill and a tower, though the gold lead remained the same.
Slowly, as the teams approached the Baron spawning, GEN started to turn the screw across the map. The lead was still just 1.5k, however, GEN had much better map control. The drake spawned, and MAD gave it up to GEN, as they claimed their third of the game. A bold play by MAD as they stole again a Baron from underneath GEN. MAD moved to claim the drake, and did stop GEN in their attempt to claim the Soul drake. On the back of that fight, MAD took down two members of GEN as the gold lead swung to MAD.
Back and forth with everything on the line
The next Baron spawned, and the early fight went the way of GEN, but MAD managed to stay in the fight as it went three-for-two in favor of GEN. The Baron crucially wasn’t taken. Later, MAD reengaged onto the Baron and claimed it, but GEN were able to claim the Soul drake in return, with MAD too indecisive to stop them.
Afterward, GEN picked up two massive kills onto MAD after a misplay by two members of MAD. While MAD remained in a gold lead, GEN had reclaimed full control of the map. MAD once again tried to sneak a Baron but this time it was a disaster as GEN stole it. In the ensuing fight, MAD were Ace’d and GEN claimed the victory. GEN moved to 4-1 in the group, as MAD lost the power to control their own fate in it.

LNG Esports vs Team Liquid
First Blood went over to TL, which was exactly what TL needed. After that, TL picked up another big kill in the mid lane, though this time it was traded back. While the game quieted down as we moved past the 13-minute mark, TL picked up a first tower and another kill, as they quietly moved to 2k gold ahead. TL had continued to get control but made their first slip up as the third drake spawned, losing CoreJJ and the drake to LNG.
At the 24-minute mark, the game had continued to tick over. With three drakes on the side of TL and a 3k gold lead, TL had firm control. We finally got some action a minute later with TL getting a three-for-one kill trade in a mid lane fight, claiming the Baron off the back of it. TL used the buff to push into the LNG base, claiming a bot lane Inhibitor straight away. Wanting to find a game-changing play, LNG pulled the trigger on a fight, Teleporting in behind TL, but they simply lacked the damage. In the engage, LNG lost two, picking up just the TL support in return.
LNG managed to steal away the Soul drake once again from TL, however, with Alphari Teleporting into the base, LNG just couldn’t answer. LNG wasn’t able to get back to defend as their Nexus dropped and TL moved to 2-1 to level with LNG in the group.

- Time: 30:07
- Kills: 4-12
- Turrets: 4-11

Gen.G vs LNG Esports
First Blood went the way of LNG after a sketchy dive in the top lane saw them pick up a kill. Then, there was a repeat gank top side for LNG, as they claimed another kill, making GEN fall 1.5k gold behind just seven minutes in. Ale’s Fiora was huge, smashing Burdol into the dirt and putting him behind 70 CS by 11 minutes. There’s a fight next at the Rift Herald, and while the objective reset, LNG picked another two kills, with GEN finally picking up their first kill. More and more strong plays across the map from LNG, securing three more kills and a second Rift Herald.
Moments later disaster struck for GEN. They lost another three members in a fight in the bot river while losing an Inhibitor tower at 17 minutes. LNG had moved to 8k gold ahead at this point as GEN collapsed. Rift Herald crashed into the bot lane as LNG picked up yet another Inhibitor tower, though they overplayed their hand in the engagement and lost two members. Had they not been 8k ahead, that could have easily been an Ace for GEN.
With Mountain Soul spawning and a second Baron on the map, LNG took their time to secure the drake. While LNG got the Mountain Soul, Ale was caught out and GEN somehow managed to claim a free Baron. LNG were playing with fire, though they just managed to hold on. The gold lead had dropped to just 7k, as LNG showed a moment of weakness. Eventually, LNG finally found the game-winning play, and GEN tried to hold but it wasn’t possible. LNG forced one last fight and promptly won the game. With a 7k lead from such an early stage, it was a longer game than expected. The result keeps the group wide open, as Group D continued to deliver.

- Turrets: 2-11

MAD Lions vs Team Liquid
First Blood over to MAD, the start they needed, and they got it early. Shortly after, MAD found another two huge kills, one in the bot lane and another in the mid. With that going on, however, TL crucially picked up a kill top side to got on the board. Two more kills were picked up by in quick succession for TL as they recovered from the early game gold deficit to bring things even moving into the mid game.
The mid game began as the early game ended, with kills traded across the map. MAD lost out in kills but managed to pick up more turret plates. With Baron on the map, it’s the same story as before. The gold lead is nearly even as the tension of the match is clearly on display. MAD made a push down the mid lane, picking up two kills and the final outer tower as they moved to Baron. MAD engaged the Baron but TL were able to stop it and claimed a kill. Not too long after that, MAD made another attempt for Baron but this time it was a bait. MAD pivoted off the Baron to beat TL in a fight, claiming two members of TL before securing a safe Baron.
With Baron, MAD headed to the top lane but only managed to get a kill with TL keeping their Inhibitors up. TL forced a play into the mid lane, and while the initial engagement was perfect, the lack of follow-up damage was punished. MAD were able to walk away with all five members, with TL losing two. Seeing this opening, MAD were able to claim another Baron. Desperately trying to claw the game back, TL once again forced a fight and again MAD came out on top. With a team fight win, MAD pushed into the base and secured the victory as they kept themselves alive at Worlds 2021.

Team Liquid vs Gen.G
After seven minutes of quiet, it was advantage for TL as they picked up two kills for one in return in a mid lane 4v4 fight. Then, in the top side, GEN picked up a kill top side to close the TL gold lead. The drake fight broke out and it was TL who came out on top, picking up two kills and the drake in the process. GEN traded three back before TL equaled that as well. It was a bloodbath in the early game as TL continued to force their lead.
Towers were traded across the map, though GEN pushed in the top side of the map with the Rift Herald. Shortly afterward, the third drake spawned on the map and it was easily claimed again by TL with GEN not looking to contest. TL got a kill on the backside of the map but the objective went to TL. While TL were able to claim an uncontested Dragon Soul, GEN were able to claim a kill. With that man advantage, they pushed mid to claim a tower but the Cloud Soul still went over to TL, giving them a huge buff. GEN used the proceeding time to contest Baron. They peeled away to take down Jensen with TL chasing.
Moving into the late game, TL decided to sneak a Baron but it was spotted out by GEN. Being foiled there, TL once again forced a fight and this time it paid off. They cut down GEN, claimed an Elder Drake and turning that into a Baron. With all the buffs, TL forced down the mid lane while GEN went bot side, but it was TL that took the Inhibitor as GEN were forced to defend. TL were able to forced the base, and despite GEN almost saving the base, TL claimed the win to force at least two tiebreakers, as once again the four-way tiebreakers moved closer.

LNG Esports vs MAD Lions
It was the First Blood MAD needed and it came in the bottom side river in a fight broken out over the scuttle crab. MAD picked up three kills with just one over in return. Afterward, MAD pulled off another play, this time in the mid lane. While it only ended up securing the one kill, it was close to being more. Going through the early game, there were more kills for MAD as they continued to extend their lead. By the nine-minute mark, MAD were 3k gold ahead already.
And this lead grew fast. With just 14 minutes on the clock, MAD were 7k ahead as LNG looked to be on the ropes. LNG found themselves pushed in across the map, and with the top lane already open, they fell to 9k behind. The game finally saw a moment of calm, as MAD played patiently to make sure they secured the win. MAD moved to claim a Baron and it was easily secured. With it, MAD secured the bot lane Inhibitor. Trying to hit back, LNG forced a fight with MAD pushing in the mid lane. Surprisingly, they succeed in holding MAD off for now, so both sides reset.
Off the reset, MAD came back to the mid lane as they looked to end. During the push, the Inhibitor remained but the tower fell. The MAD gold lead was 11k as they slowly starved LNG of XP and gold. MAD pushed once again as they secured three inhibitors. MAD were able to secure the win and we strap in for four more matches

Tiebreaker: Team Liquid vs Gen.G
This crucial game didn’t start off like TL would’ve liked. First Blood was picked up by GEN in the mid lane, as TL wasn’t able to get anything else on the map. However, TL rebounded and made it onto the board by securing a kill around a drake fight, though the drake remained alive. A top lane gank was next for TL, as they committed four members to the dive before moving to secure the Rift Herald. Tensions are tight, and as we moved firmly into the mid game by the 17-minute mark, the gold was even with both sides slowly taking advantages on the map.
TL secured the next drake, but on the tail end of the fight, GEN did manage to claim two massive kills to move themselves ahead in gold. It all started to go wrong for TL, with Bdd looking far too strong on Zoe, as he managed to pick off members of TL regardless of where they decided to hide. Despite his amazing picks, TL did manage to get a shutdown off of Bdd when he was caught out in their jungle. Then, Alphari looked set to get a 1v1 outplay onto Rascal, but he lost before the rest of GEN turned up to secure two kills. After that, GEN fought for the Baron, and despite Santorin being dead, Jensen was able to steal away the Baron.
Heartbreak for NA
With Baron, TL wasn’t able to knock down a significant amount of the GEN base. With the buff fading, GEN managed to siege the top side of the TL base and knock down the Inhibitor Tower. Mountain Soul was secured for GEN as TL couldn’t deal with the poke. No one from TL fell but with multiple members resetting, GEN were given a free Baron. With buffs on their back, GEN looked to end the game. With the base ripped apart, TL lost two members and it was over for TL. It was a near loss for TL, but with that loss, they’re head home. GEN moved on to face the winner of the next tiebreaker.

- Time: 36:37
- Kills: 14-5

Tiebreaker: LNG Esports vs MAD Lions
First Blood went over to LNG, who then picked up a second kill instantly, getting off to a nice start. In response, MAD sent three members to the top side but it was the worst possible scenario for MAD, who had everything to do to get back in the game. It was another kill over to LNG as they secured a 1.5k gold lead at the seven-minute mark. MAD finally got a kill onto the map, diving the top lane 3v1, but disaster struck when two members of MAD died to the tower. Shortly after, ther was another dive from MAD in the mid lane this time. They did get the kill but again lost a kill back, though the Rift Herald was dropped top side, so MAD managed to keep the deficit to just 2k.
By the mid game, MAD had fallen to 4k gold behind, with LNG claiming two drakes. The only saving grace for MAD was the double Rift Herald. MAD made a desperate play in the top side, forcing two Teleports and the entire team into the play. MAD got the early kill but it was eventually traded over, though LNG gained the top tower for their trouble. LNG got a kill prior to Baron being engaged, but then the Baron is claimed by LNG. However, MAD went huge in the fight and managed to take down four members of LNG. The follow-up fight onto the drake saw MAD claim the buff with the team fight going one-for-one.
A desperate race for Quarterfinals
As we approached the 30-minute mark, MAD had managed to keep the gold disadvantage at just 2k as they remained in the game, despite a number of early losses. Another team fight with Baron back on the Rift, and it’s a dream start for MAD, though it was traded back. MAD pressured the Baron, but without a jungler on the map, MAD had to retreat off the map as LNG were able to claim the Dragon Soul.
Soon after, Ale forced an all-in with three members of MAD exposed, but before his team could back him up, MAD were able to take him down. With Elder just 25 seconds away, MAD needed to make a move before LNG were at full health. A 5v5 on the Elder is up and it’s started off as a two-for-one kill trade for MAD, as the fight extended, it ended three-for-two as MAD took a minor lead on the Rift. With LNG members off the map, MAD engaged the Elder and claimed it. The kills traded one-for-one afterward as MAD secured a huge win condition for two minutes.
With Baron also up, MAD claimed it to secured the double uber buffs. MAD wasn’t able to get the fight with the Elder, but the LNG base was exposed. With two Inhibitors secured MAD were able to walk away. Going on the offensive, LNG pushed into the MAD base to try and win it. But MAD managed to hold and kill everyone from LNG. Having long death-timers, LNG couldn’t help but watch as MAD pushed down their base.

Tiebreaker: Gen.G vs MAD Lions
The battle for first seed got off to a slow start, which wasn’t normal for Group D. Finally, GEN picked up a Double Kill at the 7:30 mark as the game came to life. MAD got onto the board in the bot lane, with Carzzy picking up a kill to get MAD a minor gold lead. GEN quickly moved back into a gold lead after a number of plays across the map. More fighting on the bot side, with MAD picking up a kill but two more going over to GEN, as their gold lead extended to 4k.
MAD managed to secure the second drake, as they crucially kept a potential late-game win condition. With Baron spawning on the map, GEN had claimed their fifth tower to MAD’s one, as GEN held a 5k gold lead. At the next Drake, it came down to a 50/50 with MAD desperately trying to claim it. But GEN stayed calm and secured the drake. A little bit after, there was another winning skirmish and drake for GEN. Their lead remained at 4k gold while MAD continued to stay in the game. GEN managed to get a MAD Inhibitor, as they finally turned some map pressure onto the map.
Holding on for dear life
GEN were able to get a third drake and found a solid win condition. Eventually, GEN were able to claim a Baron, but a big play on the tail end saw MAD pick up the Ace, completely negating the advantage GEN found. However, GEN secured the Dragon Soul, and the fight went their way. They took down four members of MAD, losing just three themselves. The game continued but it looked like another game that would come down to a combination of Baron and Elder Drake. GEN forced an engagement in the mid lane with Kennen but Carzzy came in to clean up for MAD, securing a two-for-one kill trade.
Not too much later, Baron was secured for GEN, who risked leaving it down to a 50/50. The Elder fight was next, and it was secured by GEN as MAD tried to steal it in a 50/50. GEN managed to win a team fight off the back of the play, as they secured the MAD Nexus and the top seed in Group D.
