Rodríguez is suspended for eight weeks by his organization after his tweets garnered negative attention on the social media platform.
Over the course of the G2’s history, since the days of Gamers2, Carlos “ocelote” Rodríguez Santiago has been a divisive figure for most people. The former League of Legends pro turned owner and CEO of one of the most successful esports teams in Europe is no stranger to getting criticism online, whether for his aggressiveness when it comes to dealing with player contracts or for more real-life problems such as his involvement with Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia’s investments into esports in recent years are a heavily discussed topic among fans. They’ve made multiple moves in the scene such as the merger of FACEIT and ESL and their eventual acquirement by Saudi Savvy Gaming Group, or the proposed but eventually canceled partnership between LEC and the Saudi Arabian city Neom. Ocelot had said “…neither G2 nor [he] will be taking money ‘earned’ from genocide and ethnic cleansing. Ever,” but was criticized for this statement after accepting a role as a speaker at a Saudi Esports Federation event.
And now the most recent controversy by G2’s CEO came yesterday when he tweeted a celebration video captioned, “yesterday we celebrated G2’s world championship.” This sparked a lot of backlash from the community as one of the people that can be seen in the video is a man named Andrew Tate, who has been in the news recently as he got arrested in Romania for holding two women in his house against their will. Aside from his arrest, Tate is infamous for his misogynistic views toward women, his preaching of toxic masculinity and his distasteful comments about sexual assault.
This, of course, rubbed a lot of G2 fans or other parts of the esports communities the wrong way, especially as this video came a couple of weeks after G2 announced their female League of Legends team. Many different personalities replied to ocelote’s tweet criticizing him for his reckless promotion of a figure whose views can harm the community, including G2’s own Jakub “Lothar” Szygulski and LEC caster Aaron “Medic” Chamberlain.

G2 Esports was quick to respond about the topic as they put a tweet today, informing their fans that after deliberation with the Supervisory Board, ocelote would be suspended for eight months, or at least “take eight weeks of leave as CEO,” and he would forfeit his pay for the duration.
While there are some questions about how this could affect ocelote’s future with G2 or if he would see any more punishment from G2’s partners such as Riot Games, who has certain guidelines for their franchised team owners, there hasn’t been any official communication about the topic so far.
