Another Set of Jungle Changes Is Coming to League of Legends With Patch 13.5

Riot’s battle with the jungle in the Season 2023 continues long after the preseason ended.

The state of jungle is one of the most dividing topics among the League of Legends players. But ever since the preseason ended, most of the community seems to think the role is in a state that is not fun for anyone else in the game, sometimes even for the junglers. With the counter-jungling changes in the preseason and with the new jungle pets helping some champions’ early clears, the meta has been pretty much focused on early ganking.

Especially with the ADC changes a couple of patches ago making bot lane a very important role to snowball, and with ranged supports making the downside of the map very unpredictable, it wasn’t uncommon to see a level 2 or 3 gank from junglers every game. And with the catch-up XP from the camps being very strong meant farming junglers weren’t able to get themselves a lead by full clearing, which meant ganking became a necessity.

With people complaining about the current meta of solo queue and pro play, Riot has been trying to diversify things for two patches now. But it apparently wasn’t enough to make significant differences, so with patch 13.5 we will get more significant changes.

Jungle camp gold and experience will change in 13.5

  • Sweeper cooldown increased from 90 – 60 seconds to 120 – 60 seconds
  • Jungle items now deal 20% bonus damage against all jungle camps
  • Jungle lane XP at first 14 minutes reduced from 75% to 40% – 75% scaling linearly with game time.
  • Gromp gold increased from 70 to 80
  • Blue Buff gold increased from 80 to 90
  • Red buff gold increased from 80 to 90
  • Big wolf gold increased from 50 to 55
  • Small wolf gold increased from 13 to 15
  • Big raptor gold increased from 30 to 35
  • Small raptor gold increased from 7 to 8
  • Medium Krug gold increased from 5 to 10
  • Small Krug gold increased from 13 to 14

All these changes are focused on two big complaints, early ganking from junglers like Elise or Amumu and how punishing them by counter-jungling is very hard at the moment. Sweeper and lane XP for junglers should make ganking a lot harder and a lot less efficient as moving around the vision to get kills will require more work and junglers will get less of a reward in terms of XP. Combined with the kill XP nerfs in the last patch, it will be near impossible to keep up with full clearing junglers by ganking and getting lane minion and kill XP.

On top of that, all jungle camps will give more gold, so a Graves clearing his camps over and over will be much more ahead compared to his counterpart who ganked level three. To help with punishing ganking junglers more by taking their camps, Riot is also reverting the counter-jungling debuff they added in the preseason.

With patch 13.5 dropping in two weeks, expect to see a lot more carry junglers coming back into the meta, Graves and Nidalee are the two first coming to mind. Karthus is another jungler you can look to pick up as he is already strong and will benefit a lot from these changes. On the other side of the coin, Elise will probably be the champion punished by these changes most, even more so considering she just got some individual nerfs due to her solo queue and pro play dominance.
