We go through some of the things worth taking into consideration before you pick your hero in pubs.
Whether we like pubs or not, we click “Play Dota” and pick our favorite heroes all the time. Even though some people might not be keen on playing with random people, others are happy when they have the chance to compete against others.
Playing pubs is usually fun, but there are many cases where you could run into problems, especially if the game is not going in your favor. Although this largely depends on your MMR bracket, there are game ruiners everywhere, even among the best. That’s why you need to be careful when playing.
Speaking of being careful, one of the most important things to keep in mind is related to picking the right hero. There are several things you should consider when choosing a hero in Dota 2, so let’s check out which are most important.
Pick the hero that your team needs the most
Most people who play Dota 2 prefer to play mid, safe lane, or offlane. Even though these positions have their advantages, sometimes, you have to play support if you want your team to win. That’s why one of the most important things to remember is to pick the hero that your team needs the most.
Despite the fact that no one likes having four carries in his team, picking support in a situation like this could do wonders. The fact that everyone wants to play core usually means that you are in the lower MMR brackets. So, by picking support, you drastically increase your chances of winning because the enemy team probably won’t try to end the game sooner. In other words, your teammates will eventually get the items they need and win the game.
Pick your hero based on the given scenario
Once you choose your desired position, it is time to decide which hero to play. If you select one of the cores, you shouldn’t pick first unless you want to play a particular hero because this will allow you to see what the enemy goes for. Needless to say, you can always pick a counter for the given lane and win.
If you’re unsure which hero to pick, try asking your teammates what heroes they plan on getting. There are tons of combos you can put to the test, some of which will allow you to get easy MMR.
Choose a hero good in the current patch
The fact that you have a favorite hero and want to use it while playing is great, but this doesn’t mean that hero is always worth it. Every Dota 2 patch usually has at least a few heroes that are considered more potent than others. In most cases, they work well in pubs, which is why people pick them all the time. You should try to do the same, but only if you know how to utilize the hero’s full potential.
There are many things that you can do to check who the top heroes are; reading guides, watching replays and keeping up with the patch notes will all help you get a sense of who is most powerful in the current meta. If you don’t want to play the specific hero that is considered “OP”, try to ban it so the enemy team doesn’t pick. The last thing you want is to play against something that’s really hard to defeat.
