Old faces, new teams; your ESL ANZ Champs Season 14 guide

ESL ANZ Champs Season 14: Next week will see two teams progress to playoffs, and two teams depart the season early

[ad_1]

Season 14 of the ESL ANZ Championship is upon us. Sixteen teams will take to the server over the coming months, with a spot at the EPL Conference and title of Oceania’s best up for grabs.

  • Sanguine holds off Dynasty in tight 2-1 series
  • Nut-E Gaming drop map one in OT but dominate Hysteria in following two
  • Games resume on Monday night;

ESL ANZ Champs enters the first major week of competition next week, with the Swiss stage format meaning our first playoff contenders — and our first teams eliminated — will emerge come next Thursday.

Last week’s matches saw the top four of Renegades, Vertex, Order and Paradox break away from the main pack, but next week will see two of them drop a series.

RNG will play Order, who saw Counter-Strike-turned-Valorant veteran Tyler “tucks” Reilly stand-in in their 2-1 win against Kingsmen. It is not clear yet if he will remain with the line-up beyond last week, with the team yet to secure a permanent fifth.

Similarly for Vertex, with Toby “BRACE” Barnes out indefinitely, Hugh “HUGHMUNGUS” Anderson has taken up the spot as the squad battled through DGG Esports.

They’ll play Paradox, who are going from strength to strength this season — the squad have won nine from their last twelve maps and will be hungry to qualify for the Champs playoffs early.

Further below, Joshua “supar” Bundle consigned Hysteria to the 0-2 bracket with a monster 77 frag performance in Nut-E’s 2-1 series win, while Sanguine’s unit all contributed equally in their win over Dynasty.

Hysteria and Dynasty join Collateral Esports and Kanga in the 0-2 bracket, with two of the four teams eliminated next week.

ESL ANZ Champs Preview (February 27)

ESL Australia’s ANZ Champs has returned for Season 14, and will start tonight with Order taking on Camo and Vertex battling against Dynasty.

There are more question marks over the scene than ever before; plenty of top teams have made adjustments over the off-season, with the regulars getting early overseas experience under their belts ahead of the Championship.

Order, Renegades and Vertex received direct invites to this season of ANZ Champs, while 13 more teams made it through the open qualifier, including big names Paradox, Overt and 8Ballers.

Reigning champions LookingForOrg will not be present for ANZ Champs Season 14, with the team still competing and bootcamping in Europe.

Order will be seeking their fourth ANZ Champs title after falling just short to LFO last season, while Renegades enter the Championship for the first time since Season 11.

ESL ANZ Champs, and it’s lower tier in ANZ Main, will run side-by-side throughout the next two months before the playoffs commence in early May.

ESL ANZ Champs S14 rosters

The region is in the midst of a massive reshuffle, with more roster changes planned in the coming month.

Luke “ekul” Bailey announced his retirement following Order’s win at Rivalry’s Insanely Awesome CS:GO Tournament, but will stand-in for the team until further notice.

Liam “malta” Schembri has completed his move from Renegades to Vertex, while Jay “Liazz” Tregillgas will remain in the Renegades roster for the beginning of ESL ANZ Champs. Sources indicate he was standing in for RNG temporarily at IEM Katowice.

UPDATE March 10: Isaac “prodigy” Dahlan announced that Darcy “Mr Shark” Clarke will permanently replace Julian “JoolzCheat” Griffin going forward.

UPDATE March 17: DoMilk will compete under “Collateral Esports”.
