Japan: Square Enix registers Final Fantasy VII Day, which is today

It is hard to believe but today is the day the remarkable Final Fantasy VII was released back in Japan in 1997 on Sony’s ultra-successful PlayStation One console. Square Enix has recognised the event and has proclaimed that today is Final Fantasy VII day. The director of the original game has said that it was the day “big things started moving for those of us who worked on the game.” He said that technology at the time was moving at a “breakneck speed” for video games and left the team “dreaming big things for the future.” The original Final Fantasy VII is available on the Nintendo eShop and Final Fantasy VII Remake is available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles.

“The 31st of January 1997, the day that FINAL FANTASY VII came out, was not just a significant day for the FINAL FANTASY series, but also marked when so many big things started moving for those of us who worked on the game. I remember being overwhelmed at the breakneck speed with which video game technology was evolving but also dreaming big things for the future. With the establishment of this official anniversary day. I will now always remember these things, and hold them dearly in my heart.”
